A Hillsborough County (Florida, US) release of 9 October 2026 says County Mosquito Management Services would apply Dibrom from the air to control adult mosquitoes from 7:30 p.m. on 9 October to 6 a.m. on 10 October 2026 (Florida time) over Apollo Beach, Ruskin and Wimauma.

Main points

  • The helicopter flies at 150 feet (about 46 m) with an application rate of 0.66 ounces per acre. The first alternate spray date is 10 October 2026 and the second is 12 October 2026.
  • The Apollo Beach/Ruskin area runs from Big Bend Road south to the Manatee County line, between U.S. 41 and Tampa Bay. The Wimauma area runs from Lightfoot Road to the Manatee County line, between U.S. 301 and U.S. 41.
  • Reason: the County’s mosquito traps in many neighbourhoods show dengue virus activity in the mosquito population; crews are increasing treatments by air and on the ground, working with the Florida Department of Health in Hillsborough County on surveillance, education and treatment.
  • Tires discarded near homes or businesses are ideal breeding sites; Hillsborough Solid Waste customers can drop off up to 12 tires a year free of charge at the County’s five collection sites. Residents are urged to follow the “3 Ds”: dress in light-coloured, long-sleeved clothing and closed-toe shoes; defend with a repellent containing a CDC-recommended ingredient (DEET, picaridin, IR3535 or oil of lemon eucalyptus); and dump or cover standing water. Residents can sign up to be notified when their area is treated.

VPMA’s note

An example of wide-area space spraying triggered by virus surveillance in mosquitoes, with the schedule, spray boundaries, flight height, rate and alternate dates published openly, plus a tire collection measure. Members who support local authorities can learn from this kind of transparent notice; in Vietnam, the choice of insecticide, dose and spraying method must follow health authority guidance.
