On 30 July 2026 in Jakarta, Indonesia’s Ministry of Health and the World Mosquito Program signed a memorandum of understanding on Wolbachia technology, toward a goal of no dengue deaths by 2030.

Main points

  • WMP said Indonesia is in the group of two countries reporting the highest dengue cases and deaths in the world. In 2024 the country reported more than 257,000 cases and more than 1,400 deaths.
  • The cooperation covers closer surveillance, earlier detection and treatment, community mobilisation, vector control, and evidence-based technology such as Wolbachia. Andi Saguni, Director-General for Disease Control, said the 2030 goal needs faster prevention and use of innovations that have been shown to work.
  • A randomised controlled trial in Yogyakarta, published in the New England Journal of Medicine in June 2021, found that areas where Wolbachia was released had 77% fewer dengue cases and 86% fewer hospital admissions than areas without release. In 2023 Yogyakarta recorded 67 cases, down from more than 1,700 in 2016.
  • WMP is technical adviser to a five-city pilot: Bandung, Semarang, Bontang, Kupang and West Jakarta. The organisation says Wolbachia mosquitoes are already at work in 16 countries, protecting more than 16 million people.

VPMA’s note

This is an Indonesian agreement, not a programme of Vietnam. Members should read it as one technical direction that a ministry of health has put into a national plan, alongside surveillance and treatment of breeding sites.
