The Times Sierra Leone published an article by a health promotion officer of Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Health: from 6 to 20 October 2026 the Ministry, through the National Malaria Control Programme and partners, is deploying 101,862 spatial emanators in Sittia and Dema chiefdoms (Bonthe District) and Yoni Mabanta and Poli chiefdoms (Tonkolili District).

Main points

  • A spatial emanator slowly releases insecticide into the surrounding space; the insecticide kills or weakens mosquitoes and reduces their ability to settle and bite people.
  • Community Health Workers and other trained personnel install the devices directly in eligible households, going house to house to explain what the device is, why it is being introduced, where it should be placed and how it fits into the malaria prevention strategy. The deployment is supported by the US Government.
  • The devices do not replace insecticide-treated nets, indoor residual spraying, preventive medicines or the malaria vaccine; families are still encouraged to sleep under a net every night.
  • According to the WHO 2025 Sierra Leone malaria country profile cited in the article, Sierra Leone reported about 2 million presumed and confirmed malaria cases (about 1.9 million confirmed) and about 2,500 deaths in 2024; WHO estimates are higher, at about 2.4 million cases and 6,600 deaths. Reported cases fell by about 14% in 2024.

VPMA’s note

The Association website has reported research on a spatial repellent in Mozambique; this news shows a similar tool now deployed at programme scale as an extra layer of protection, not a replacement for nets and residual spraying. Any such product sold in Vietnam must comply with the rules on insecticidal products for household and medical use.
