The World Mosquito Program reported on 17 August 2026 that in Comas, northern Lima, Peru’s Ministry of Health (MINSA) leads a Wolbachia programme with WMP, the Puerto Rico Science, Technology and Research Trust and the US CDC. Peru is the first country to adopt WMP’s Strategic Partnership Model in full. MINSA authorised the strategy by Ministerial Resolution No. 485-2025-MINSA.

Main points

  • The long-term goal is installed, sovereign, self-sustaining capacity inside the Peruvian state. The partnership was formed in 2025, with DIRIS Lima Norte and local community leaders.
  • The article cites WHO: Peru had more than 271,500 dengue cases in 2024 and a further 39,000 the following year (the article of 17 August 2026 says “last year”).
  • Community communication in Zone 6 and Zone 4 (Comas) is told through delegates Alicia Lurdes Bravo Yupanqui and Carmen Luz Estrella Paz. Isabel Alarcón (Incident Management System for the Wolbachia Plan) stresses community participation and adapting to local reality.
  • The article does not publish a case-reduction rate after releases in Comas; it emphasises capacity building and community trust.

VPMA’s note

This is a programme in Peru. It does not infer that Vietnam has adopted or will adopt the same partnership model.
