On 13 March 2026 the National Environment Agency said Project Wolbachia – Singapore will expand to Bukit Panjang, Little India, Pioneer, Toa Payoh and Ang Mo Kio from April to October 2026, covering more than 800,000 households, about 50% of households.

Main points

  • NEA said the expansion adds about 100,000 households, to more than 800,000 by the end of 2026, including most areas at risk of large dengue outbreaks. The mosquitoes released are non-biting male Aedes aegypti carrying Wolbachia.
  • NEA said studies showed that in release areas Ae. aegypti populations fell by 80–90%, and residents had over 70% lower dengue risk. Residents next to release areas were 45% less likely to contract dengue than those with no releases. A footnote says the 2022–2024 multi-site field study was published in the New England Journal of Medicine on 11 February. The page does not give the year of that 11 February.
  • Project Wolbachia marks its 10th anniversary this October, the notice says. NEA says the tool complements, and does not replace, removal of stagnant water. The B-L-O-C-K steps on the page are: break up hardened soil; lift and empty flowerpot plates; overturn pails and wipe their rims; change water in vases; keep roof gutters clear and place BTI insecticide inside.
  • The programme targets Ae. aegypti, the primary vector of dengue and Zika in Singapore. NEA notes that residents may still meet other biting mosquito species.

VPMA’s note

This is a Singapore programme. The steps for standing water are what NEA told residents there. They are not an Association procedure.
