ECDC published on 20 August 2026 the findings of a questionnaire on surveillance and control of Culex mosquitoes (WNV vectors) and invasive Aedes mosquitoes in the EU/EEA, enlargement countries and the UK. For 2020–2025: Culex surveillance in 17 countries (control in 12); invasive Aedes surveillance in 20 countries (control in 17).

Main points

  • The report is based on a USurvey questionnaire; the ECDC page date is 20 August 2026.
  • Culex (WNV): surveillance in 17 countries, control in 12; activities vary widely and are often limited by short-term funding and weak long-term planning; adult control with biocides is common.
  • Invasive Aedes: surveillance in 20 countries, control in 17; emphasis on immature stages with biocidal and non-biocidal tools, often with community mobilisation; reactive adult control is largely ad hoc; long-term funding and elimination strategies are often lacking.
  • Organisation differs by country (national, regional or local). The report aims to highlight needs to strengthen preparedness and response.
