A paper of 5 October 2026 in PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases evaluated ground ultra-low volume (ULV) spraying with deltamethrin plus pyrethrum extract in Hungary, using a before–after–control–impact (BACI) design: mosquito numbers at treated sites fell by about 47% on average, while non-target flying insects, including pollinators, fell by more than 40%.

- Method: licensed professional companies sprayed from truck-mounted mist sprayers between 10pm and 2am in June–August, using Deltasect Plus 20 ULV (2.22% deltamethrin + 0.22% Chrysanthemum cinerariaefolium extract) diluted 1:15 or undiluted Deltasect Plus 1.2 ULV. Mosquitoes were caught with BG Sentinel traps and other insects with Malaise traps, sampling about 24 hours before and after spraying.
- Native and invasive mosquitoes (Aedes albopictus, Aedes koreicus) fell by similar proportions. Results varied widely between sites: the decline was linked to initial mosquito abundance and maximum wind power during sampling, but not to distance from the spray vehicle’s path, spraying time, rainfall or temperature.
- The authors note that a reduction below 80% is usually considered insufficient for meaningful suppression where nuisance is high or arboviruses are circulating, and conclude that ULV spraying involves a trade-off between reducing mosquitoes and protecting insect biodiversity.
VPMA’s note
A short-term study in Hungary. A point for members doing space spraying: check wind before spraying and assess mosquito density before and after treatment. It does not imply that the products named are registered in Vietnam.
