Decision No. 631/QD-BYT of 12 March 2026 of the Ministry of Health, signed by Deputy Minister Nguyen Thi Lien Huong, issues the 2026 Communicable Disease Prevention and Control Plan, effective from signing. For dengue, the 2026 targets are an incidence below 170 per 100,000 people (equal to or lower than 2025) and a case fatality rate below 0.09%.
Main points
- 2025 results stated in the plan: 168,140 dengue cases and 33 deaths nationwide; cases rose 26.3% compared with 2024. Incidence was 164 per 100,000, above the 2025 target (below 150); the case fatality rate was 0.03%.
- 2026 forecast: dengue is expected to keep rising in the south, the central region, the Central Highlands and some large northern cities such as Hanoi, Hai Phong and Quang Ninh; it may start from June in the south and centre and from August in the north, lasting until November.
- Other 2026 targets: hand, foot and mouth disease below 100 per 100,000 with case fatality below 0.05%; malaria below 0.5 per 100,000. The 2025 vector surveillance target was at least two provincial and one district-level sites.
- Tasks: integrate communicable disease surveillance software with environmental data for early warning, especially for vector-borne diseases; ensure logistics, funding, supplies, chemicals, equipment and staff under the “four on-the-spot” principle; assign targets to commune People’s Committees for controlling endemic diseases.
